Representation
Welcome back! Let's talk about representation, it's important.Representation in film is how a film portrays people, this can include gender, race, ethnicity, and disabilities. For example, in Black Panther, the cast was predominantly black, allowing children to acknowledge a black superhero. Our group took representation into account and made sure the opener could apply to a wide group. Our representation is shown through the main character, a vulnerable and naive girl, Tatyana.
To start, our film opener may come off as stereotypical in some ways. This is due to our main character, Tatyana is a 5'2" bashful dark-skinned lady. The internet has made a stereotype that goes something like, "the black guy always dies first" in genres such as horror. In our film, this is played out when Tatyana naively digests the chicken and faints. This does not really challenge representation much, and if we had to make changes I would start with this. We could have either switched out her character for a new one, or add in more black characters to support her role. However, Tatyana still acted amazingly, which is part of the reason why she was the one to die. She was the only one to make it believable!
Tune in next time!
